How to measure

  1. Measure the length and width of the floor with a tape (feet and inches).
  2. Measure how high up the wall the tiles go — usually 7 ft in a bathroom, 8–10 ft in a kitchen.
  3. Enter the door width and window sizes — tiles there are left out.
  4. Measure each side of the kitchen counter separately; an L-shape has two sides.

Worked examples

A 12′ × 10′ room, 7′ walls, 2.5′ door: (12 + 10) × 2 = 44′ × 7 − 2.5 × 7 = 290.5 → 300 sft of wall; floor 12 × 10 + 3 = 123 sft.

A 9′ kitchen counter, 20″ deep, 24″ tiles: 9 ÷ 2 = 4.5 → 5 pieces (half pieces are not sold).

A 12×24 tile is always laid flat on a wall — a row is 12″ high, so a 7 ft wall has 7 rows.

A 10′ × 4′ balcony: the back wall 8′ high, the other three 3–4′ — each wall is worked out at its own height.

Questions and answers

How do I work out how many tiles my room needs?

Floor = length × width plus 3 sft for cutting. Walls = the distance round the room × the tile height, minus doors and windows, rounded up to 10 sft. This calculator does it for you.

How many pieces and sft are in a box of tiles?

It depends on the size and the brand — 12×18 is usually 10 pieces (15 sft), 24×24 usually 4 pieces (16 sft). The calculator counts boxes for the size you choose.

How many light, deco and deep tiles does a bathroom need?

Enter how many deep rows from the floor and how many deco rows — the rest of the wall is light. Tiles are laid flat, so a row is the short side of the tile.

How many tiles does a kitchen counter need?

Each side's length ÷ the long side of the tile, rounded up to whole pieces. A 20″ counter takes one row of 24″ tiles. On an L-shape the corner is counted once.

How much putty and vixol do I need?

1 kg of putty per 100 sft of wall, 1 kg per 150 sft of large floor tiles; one vixol per 200 sft. The result shows it for you.

Are the prices exact?

They are market averages and vary by shop, brand and area; transport is not included. For the real price leave your number in the form below and a shop near you will call.

How much does tiling cost?

Cost = tiles + grout and vixol + the fitter's labour. Enter your room, bathroom or kitchen above and it shows how many boxes you need and a total estimate from market prices for tiles and materials plus labour at the rate per sft you set.
